The Cassia nodosa (often called the Pink Cassia or Pink Shower Tree) is one of the most breathtaking flowering trees in Pakistan. During the months of May and June, it transforms the landscape into a soft cloud of pink, providing a cooling visual relief from the intense summer heat.

It is often confused with its cousin, the Cassia javanica, but is prized for its more fragrant and delicate clusters of blooms.

Description

• The Flowers: The tree produces massive “bouquets” of blossoms that start as a deep rose-pink and gradually fade to a pale white, giving the tree a beautiful multi-shaded appearance.

• The Foliage: It has long, feathery “pinnate” leaves that provide a light, dappled shade. Unlike the dense shade of a Mango tree, the Pink Cassia allows a soft, filtered light to reach the grass below.

• The Bark: It features a smooth, greyish-brown bark that becomes slightly fissured as the tree matures.

• Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing, medium-sized tree that reaches about 30 to 50 feet in height with a wide, spreading canopy that often looks like a natural umbrella.

Maintenance & Care

• Sunlight: Needs full, direct sun. It will not flower well if it is shaded by taller buildings or other trees.

• Watering: Young saplings need regular watering (2–3 times a week) to establish their roots. Mature trees are very drought-tolerant but appreciate a deep soak during the peak of June.

• Soil: Thrives in well-drained “Bhal” (canal silt). It is quite adaptable and can even grow in poorer soils as long as water doesn’t stand at the roots.

• Pruning: It requires very little maintenance. You only need to prune the lower branches in the early years if you want to create a “walk-under” canopy.

• Strength: While it is a sturdy tree, the wood can be slightly brittle. It is best to plant it away from the direct path of heavy monsoon winds if possible.
