Duranta (scientifically Duranta erecta), popularly known in local nurseries as Duranita, is the undisputed king of hedges in Pakistan. Description

• The Foliage: The leaves are small, teardrop-shaped, and grow very densely. The most popular variety is the “Golden Duranta,” which has bright, lime-yellow leaves that look like they are glowing in the sun.

• The Flowers & Berries: If left unpruned, it produces beautiful clusters of small blue or purple flowers, followed by bunches of golden-orange berries (which gives it the nickname “Golden Dewdrop”).

• Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing, woody shrub. It is naturally “leggy,” but it is famous for how well it responds to heavy shearing and shaping.

Maintenance & Care (May/June Strategy)

• Watering: During the current May heat, a Duranta hedge needs regular, deep watering. If the soil dries out too much, the leaves will wilt and drop, leaving “holes” in your hedge. Water every morning for best results.

• Pruning: To keep it as a formal hedge, you should trim it once a month during the growing season (March to October). The more you trim the tips, the thicker the hedge becomes.

• Soil: It isn’t picky and grows well in the local “Bhal” (canal silt).
